TextMate has been created by a UNIX developer exclusively for the Mac so it's tailored to make the most out of the Mac's capabilities and design aesthetics. It's absolutely packed with features among which are the possibility to search and replace text and code, auto-indent for common actions such as pasting text, auto-pairing of brackets and other characters and auto-completions of words.
However, if you look for opinions amongst developers who have used TextMate, they won't all sing it's praises. Some consider it inferior to something like the more expensive SlickEdit and long standing efforts such as jEdit.
