Gamelan yang dalam lontar Catur Murni disebut dengan gambelan Semara Aturu ini adalah barungan madya,yang bersuara merdu sehingga banyak dipakai untuk menghibur raja-raja pada zaman dahulu.Karena kemerduan suaranya,gambelan Semar Pagulingan (Semar = samara,Pagulingan = tidur) konon biasa dimainkan pada malam hari ketika raja-raja akan keperaduan (tidur).Kini gambelan ini bias dimainkan sebagai sajian tabuh instrumental dan atau untuk mengiringi tari-tarian maupun teater.

Masyarakat Bali mengenal dua macam Semar Pegulingan di Bali : yang berlaras pelog 7 (tujuh) nada dan belaras 5 (lima) nada.Kedua jenis Semar Pegulingan secara fisik lebih kecil dari pada Gong Kebyar terlihat dari ukuran instrumennya gangsa dan teromponga yang lebih kecil dari pada yang ada di Gong Kebyar.
