"المثاني" علمٌ من أعلام القرآن، من ثنى الشيءَ ثَنيًا: إذا ردّ بعضه إلى بعض، وكرره وأعاده مرة بعد مرة. وسُمي القرآن بذلك؛ لأنه تُثنَى فيه القصص والأخبار والأمثال والفرائض والوعد والوعيد مرة بعد مرة؛ أي تكرر وتعاد؛ تأكيدًا وتذكيرًا.

وخُصّت الفاتحة باسم المثاني (على قول من رجّح أنها المقصودة بالسبع المثاني)؛ لأنها تثنى في كل ركعة من كل صلاة أي تعاد وتكرر.

هذا، وقد ورد هذا الاسم الشريف في القرآن مرتين:
- الأولى في وصف بعض القرآن: (ولقد آتيناك سبعًا من المثاني والقرآنَ العظيم)، [الحجر].
- والثانية في وصف جميعه: (الله نزّل أحسنَ الحديث كتابًا متشابهًا مثانيَ...)، [الزمر].
