Find My iPhone works using iCloud the system on which iPhone users store their stuff. iPhones broadcast their location to iCloud which means that iCloud always knows where iPhones are a bit like Santa Claus alway knowing whether you've been good or bad. On losing an iPhone the owner need only consult the Find My iPhone app from any iOS device. The app then consults iCloud to locate the lost phone. If the battery is dead or the phone has been switched off it can at least notify the owner of the phone's last known location.
